The construction of this shrine was started by Guru Arjan Dev Sahib who laid its foundation stone on 1st July 1601 A.D., in memory of his saintly father Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib who had chosen to leave behind his mortal remains at this place after being killed by Mughals because he refused to recant from Sikhism which would have meant renouncing faith in God Almighty etcetera.
